EDUCATION
A large part of our role at Manawatu Hearing is to educate the community on hearing loss and hearing protection. To ensure the younger generation is included in this, we run an interactive education programme for classes in primary schools. This is aimed at reducing the incidence and prevalence of Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) and tinnitus (ringing in the ear) by changing knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of school-aged children. Programmes are completely free and are run at all times of the year.

If you feel like a class in your school would benefit from this programme please get in touch.

HOW LOUD IS TOO LOUD?
The average person can hear sounds down to about 0 dB – the sound of rustling leaves. If a sound reaches 85 dB or stronger and lasts for 8 hours or more, it can cause permanent damage. The amount of time you listen to a sound affects how much damage it will cause. A conversation occurs at about 65 dB, not loud enough to cause damage.
When listening to music on earphones at maxiumum volumel, the sound reaches a level of over 100 dB, loud enough to begin to cause permanent damage after just 15 minutes per day! A clap of thunder from a nearby storm (120 dB) or a gunshot (140) can cause immediate damage.

HEARING LOSS
Because there is currently no treatment to repair hair cells that have been damaged by loud sound, it is important for people to protect themselves from such damage. Fortunately, there are several actions a person can take to prevent noise-induced hearing loss.

HEARING PROTECTION
Walk away, turn it down and protecting your ears are three ways of preventing hearing loss. Being further away from the noise, lowering the level of noise or wearing protection such as ear muffs or ear plugs can all help you avoid hearing damage in a noisy environment.

All of these points and more are covered in our education programmes. Contact us today to book one in for your organisation.
